Resource
Lawrence Public Library Adult Literacy Program
The quick summary:
- What it is: One-on-one help with a trained tutor for reading and writing, no matter your skill level.
- The best part? It's totally free, and we even provide all the materials you need.
- Where and when: Sessions happen at the library. You sign up for one hour a week for at least six months, but you can stay in the program as long as you want.
- Schedule: You pick the time that works for you during library hours (Mon-Thu 10 AM-8 PM, Fri-Sun 10 AM-6 PM). They'll match you with a tutor who's free then.
- Flexibility: Once you're matched, you and your tutor can totally adjust the schedule if you need to.
- Wait-list info: If there isn't a tutor available when you sign up, we'll put you on a wait-list and find a new tutor who fits your schedule.
- Tutors are prepped: All tutors go through 12 hours of training and get ongoing support.
- Who can join: Both adults who are already fluent in English and those who are learning English (ELL/ESL). The tutors for English Language Learners get additional training.
- How to sign up: Fill out this online form: https://forms.gle/KMPhj6app4m4VTXv9 OR call or email Liz to set up an intake appointment. 785-843-3833, Ext. 161 or LStuewe@lplks.org
- Intake appointment: It's just a casual chat about what you want to achieve, maybe with a quick, optional reading test.
- No ID needed: You don't have to show any proof of who you are or where you live.
- Next step: After the chat, you'll be connected directly with a tutor, and you'll set the time for your first session together.
- Spread the word! If you know anyone who might be interested (colleagues or clients), share this info!
